XMAME v1.0 for GCW-Zero

After a good year in development:

HAPPY NEW YEAR: XMAME v1.0 for GCW-Zero!

It wasn't quite ready for before Christmas but at least it made a 2014 release (only just).
There's certainly more work in all the little details than what you may think!

(Latest version is v1.3)

XMAME v1.3 splash screen

Konami's Xexex running on XMAME v1.3 (Mame 0.69)

Taito's Chase HQ running on XMAME v1.3 (Mame 0.69)

What is XMAME?

XMAME is a UNIX version of MAME optimized for the GCW-Zero handheld.
The main goal of XMAME is to provide an updated version (actually versions) of MAME which was something other than the ubiquitous MAME4ALL.

Why?
  • New games. 1000s of new games.
  • Updates for existing games. ie. adding sound where previously missing and new graphical effects.
  • Save state support for some games. Disclaimer: Some games, certainly not all!
  • Better frontend launcher.
As many MAME users have already noted, later versions do tend to get slower. This is true to a degree, and confirmed by MAME developer Aaron Giles, see his post.

XMAME v1.3 for GCW-Zero supports three versions:

MAME 0.37b16, 0.69 and 0.84.

Take careful note of those versions and understand that optimally you will need three sets of ROMs to play all the games that this release supports.

The good news is that you won't really need three sets.

XMAME v1.3 updates

* Added 32-bit color mode and support in drivers where required for high quality alpha blending screens (all versions).
* Updates to drivers using ALPHA BLEND modes. Games supporting ALPHA in v1.0 - v1.2 always ran in 16-bit mode. The user will now have the option of running in 16 or 32-bit color mode. 16-bit mode is faster, 32-bit mode is more accurate and has some extra effects. The default is 16-bit mode, you need to select the 32-bit before starting the game. This only applies to certain games (see those listed below).
* Fixed: Bucky O'Hare and COW-boys of Moo-Meesa (69 and 84)
* Fixed: Dragon Blaze, Strikers 1945 II, etc (69 and 84)
* Fixed: Taito F3 games (69 and 84).
* Fixed: Analog controls (84).
* Fixed: Analog controls now have correct defaults for rotated screen modes (all versions).
* "No sound" option now works (all versions).
* Fixed: Sega System16 games like Altered Beast and Alien Storm and Enduro Racer. Hooray! Long standing bug which was really annoying! (all versions).
* Fixed: XMAME frontend after adding/removing ROMs and using "START" to refresh cached list, wasn't calculating correct number of games available for each filter mode.
* Fixed: Multi32 games like Outrunners for 69 and 84.
* Fixed: Konami games using KONAMIGX hardware (ie.Mystic Warriors, Violent Storm, etc)  for 69 and 84.
* Fixed: Gaelco 3D games however there is still an issue (see "Future release") for 84.
* Fixed: Tecmo Raiga - Strato Fighter for 84.
* Fixed: The Game Room's Lethal Justice for 84.
* Fixed: Tecmo's Super Pinball Action for 84.
* Added: save-state controls for 84. Also fixes for 52 and 69.
* Added: speed-ups for Neo Geo for 52 only. Everything runs at 100% 60

Three versions of MAME?

Correct, the frontend not only lets you choose the game but also which version of MAME to run. There are also other frontend improvements including being able to filter the ROM lists, create favourites and snapshot image support.

So will I really need all those ROM sets?

Well of course not - unless you plan to try every single game. If you are, please contact me so perhaps you could do some testing for me ;)

The versions of MAME chosen were not random, many hours went into researching which versions would be best.

The final list of versions are a nice mix of earlier releases, with MAME 0.84 providing a large number of playable games. MAME 0.84 happens to be the same version that MAMEOX - MAME for the Xbox - was based on.

Basic Installation

Copy the xmame_1.2.opk installer to your apps folder, either internal storage or external SD card.

XMAME v1.2 can be installed to the GCW-Zero's internal 16GB storage or on an external SD card.

Once the installer has started you can choose the destination - either internal or external storage.

If you want to install to the external SD card but there is no option to do so from the installer, exit the installer, and try running the "reboot" icon under "settings" in Gmenu2X. Then try running the installer again. For some reason the GCW-Zero doesn't always mount the SD card successfully first time around.

Once the destination has been selected, wait a minute or two. When finished you will have a new icon under the emulators section called XMAME v1.2.

The installer can be deleted now as it is no longer required.

Important: Before you run XMAME, you will need to copy some ROMS into each of the "roms" directories for each version of XMAME installed.

Advanced Installation

Once the basic installation is complete, you can optionally make you own adjustments.
This may include:
  • Using symlinks to share ROM folders just like the "snap" directory in the basic install.
    By default  the install sets up three separate "roms" directories one for each version but as an alternative, you could use a single "roms" directory and use symlinks to share this directory between all versions of XMAME.
If you run into trouble, delete what you've done and follow the Basic Installation again.

How does the XMAME frontend and main executables work?

The XMAME frontend checks to see which versions of XMAME are installed. The directory structure should be as per the basic install for the frontend to function correctly
ie. /xmame/xmame69/xmame.SDL.69
The new frontend allows the user to switch versions of XMAME and select a game. The new frontend then sets the XMAMEROOT environment variable (see below) and starts the selected XMAME with the parameters chosen by the user.
The XMAME executables don't explicitly need the frontend, and can be run from a shell. Indeed during development this is the best and quickest way to test games.
Each of the main XMAME executables searches for directories ie. "roms" or "snap" in a directory defined by the XMAMEROOT environment variable. If this variable is not defined it is defined when starting XMAME as the current directory where the XMAME executable resides.

Temper 0.81 for Dingoo Native v2.0

Temper is a "Turbo graphics EMulator PEr Request" originally written by Exophase - in other words a PC Engine emulator.
This release was ported by Slaanesh and works specifically for the Dingoo A320 under the native operating system.

Steam Hearts PC Engine CD Game works nicely now with improved audio!

Dai Makai Mura for PC Engine Super Grafx.

Temper has been updated to 0.81 and includes the following fixes and improvements:

* Faster! All Hucard and most CD games now run full speed at 336Mhz. All Super Grafx games run fullspeed at 384Mhz. The default clock speed is now 336Mhz.
* Audio bug fixes including a nasty CD audio bug. Much nicer audio all round.
* Changed menu keys, shoulder keys are used to navigate between files and directories.
* All keys are now re-definable. There is also a hard coded combo which always gets back to the menu: L+R+SELECT
* Screen scaling mode now supports 352 wide modes (also known as 341 pixel mode). ie. R-Type
* Other fixes.

Dingoo A320 Native and Gamepark GP32 - vAtari v2.0

I originally made vAtari because the GP32 was sorely missing a good Atari 2600 emulator and as it happens so does the Dingoo A320 in Native mode.
The original version of vAtari for the GP32 was entered into the PACC 2010 contest. It didn't win but it did provide excellent motivation to get most of the work on it done.
Since then, this version has many fixes and enhancements including more accurate graphics and sound and higher compatibility.

My two favourite Atari 2600 games: H.E.R.O

..and River Raid

The Dingoo A320 is my first .SIM release so there is no frontend end: it uses the Dingoo Native's OS to select a ROM.

The GP32 version has a frontend: select a game and press either 'A', 'B' or 'Select' to start the game. The button you press to start determines the GP32's CPU clock rate.

In both cases, the Atari 2600 ROMs should be uncompressed and have the .A26 suffix.

Controls
* Joystick provides movement for either joystick or paddle.
* 'A' Button is the fire button.
* 'B' Button is the fire buttons on the "other" controller.
* 'START' Atari Reset.
* 'SELECT' Atari Select.
* Games the require two joysticks, hold 'B' button to use second joystick
* Games the require two joysticks, 'L Shoulder' is the other fire button

A320 Specific
* 'Power Slider' to switch off.
* Hold 'L + R Shoulder' back to O/S.
* 'L Shoulder' decrease volume.
* 'R Shoulder' increase volume.
* 'Y' toggles Player 1 difficulty.
* 'X' toggles Player 2 difficulty.

GP32 Specific
* 'SELECT + START' back to frontend.
* 'L + R' Information screen
* 'L Shoulder' toggles Player 1 difficulty.
* 'R Shoulder' toggles Player 2 difficulty.

MAME4ALL v1.3 for Dingoo A320 Native

It's been a long time between releases. I've been busy with a host of stuff, so I'd better start releasing them!

First is MAME4ALL v1.3, which has a host of new features. You really do need to read the "whatsnew.txt" file included in the Binary download for all details. The "readme.txt" is also updated so please look at that for updated information on controls.

Quick summary of the major news:

* Vastly improved front-end, now featuring full snapshot preview support. Almost 2000 snapshots are included, all taken from within this version of MAME4ALL!
* Huge number of bug fixes, including a long standing sound bug which improves sound for many, many games! Including the newly supported Zwackery.
* Huge number of new games added and existing games updated.

Zwackery now works, nice game and despite needing 6 buttons, plays fine once controls are customised.

Macross, new game added, complete with sound.

 Konek-Gorbunok, another new game added.

New frontend. Grey name is a clone, Red name is a non-working game.Preview snapshots "slide" out from the right. If there is no snapshot, nothing is displayed. Multiple snapshots for the same game cycle around.

GCW-Zero version of MAME 0.37b16, MAME 0.66 and MAME 0.84 coming soon, complete with integrated frontend and preview snapshot support.

MAME4ALL v1.0 for Dingoo A380

Some time ago a forum member named 'retrodd' donated an A380 to me on the promise that I would deliver a version of MAME4ALL for this nice little handheld. Well at long last, here it is!

I'm happy to announce v1.0 of MAME4ALL for the Dingoo A380!

What is MAME4ALL (MAME)?

MAME is Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator - basically it emulates arcade games from the 70's, 80s and 90s.

MAME4ALL for the A380 is based on my Dingoo A320 Native version of MAME4ALL and includes all fixes and updates from that release. This version also contains some extra enhancements and new games playable.

The mame.dge launches the MAME4ALL game selector.
Use mame_vm.dge also has extra commands to setup and use a 64MB swapfile for extra large games - recommended with all "larger" games. ie. Neo Geo.

Temper 0.80 for Dingoo Native v1.0

What is Temper?
Temper is an NEC PC Engine emulator originally coded by Exophase and ported by Slaanesh.
 Temper plays HuCard, CD, SCD, AracdeCD and SuperGfx games.

Another one that's been a long time in the coming. Much of this was done more than a year ago, however it wasn't polished or fast enough as I couldn't use any of the ARM assembly code that a good portion of this is written in.

A few recent breakthroughs in my development toolchain and other optimizations on the native side code has meant that this is now working fullspeed on the Dingoo Native!
Most games (even CD) will run at fullspeed with no frameskip. Well all the ones I've tried - about 30 or so.
Everything seems to work fine including HuCard, CD, SCD and Arcade support. There is full OGG support for CD tracks and BZIP2 compression is also supported for compressed ROMs and savestates.

CD support and the .CUE file

For CD games, you will need .CUE and .ISO/.OGG files for data and sound tracks respectively.
I converted my own PC Engine CD games to test this out so I know that it works fine.
There isn't however a lot of error checking so the file format is picky.

The .CUE file is simply a TXT file that tells Temper what each file is. Edit it with a text editor like vim.

For example, the first 3 file entries of Castlevania would look something like this.

FILE "DraculaX_t1.ogg" OGG
  TRACK 01 AUDIO
    INDEX 01 00:00:00
FILE "DraculaX_t2.iso" BINARY
  TRACK 02 MODE1/2048
    PREGAP 00:03:00
    INDEX 01 00:00:00
FILE "DraculaX_t3.ogg" OGG
  TRACK 03 AUDIO
    PREGAP 00:02:00
    INDEX 01 00:00:00

Note that the FILE entries are just the actual filenames with no paths.
All files should be contained within the directory where the .CUE is found.
I use separate directories for each CD game, the game selector can navigate through around the filesystem.

GP32 version

I also have a GP32 version of Temper which is also quite fast and playable. Is anyone interested in a GP32 version of this anymore?

MAME4ALL v1.1 for Dingoo A320 Native

It's only been 3 years since the last release, but here it is at long last!

MAME4ALL v1.1 for Dingoo Native! Hooray!

I hope it's been worth the wait. There are LOTS of updates and changes.

There's a huge list of "what's new" so I won't list all the gory details here, suffice to say this release is bigger, better and stronger - meaning that more games work, they work faster and it's more reliable!

See the included "whatsnew.txt" for a full description of what has changed.

MAME4ALL v1.1 Splash Screen

I'm also going to release a new version of MAME4ALL for Open Dingux which will include the changes I've made in this version. I may even release another version for the GP32 - I love that old console!

Also, I've recently received a Dingoo A380 kindly donated by retrodd. I plan on releasing a version of MAME4ALL for the A380 as well.

DOSBox 0.74 v2.0 A320 Open Dingux and Ben Nanonote OpenWRT

Updated versions of DOSBox 0.74 for  A320 Open Dingux and Ben Nanonote OpenWRT.

What's New?

Swapfile = Better performing Dynamic Recompiler
Make sure you are using swapfiles on both A320 Open Dingux and Ben Nanonote OpenWRT.
This allows larger dynamic recompiler caches and as a result much faster code execution and DOSBox is on a whole a lot more stable. Civilization plays super fast now! :)
Also included are some fixes to the dyna-rec from d_smagin's DOSBox port to GCW-Zero.

A320 Open Dingux
Changes to the dosbox.conf including increasing default memsize.

Ben Nanonote
The 'del' key ('red arrow' + backspace) is now working - was mapped to something wrong.
Volume control using the keyboard now working. There is a new entry in the dosbox.conf to accommodate a default value.

nanonote_volume = 50

Other changes to the dosbox.conf including enabling the soundblaster.

You can create a 64MB swapfile on the Nanonote's NAND using the following commands:

# dd if=/dev/zero of=/swapfile bs=1024 count=65536
# mkswap /swapfile
# swapon /swapfile

Alternatively you can create a 64MB swapfile on the Nanonote's microSD using the following commands:

# dd if=/dev/zero of=/mnt/mmcblk0p1/swapfile bs=1024 count=65536
# mkswap /mnt/mmcblk0p1/swapfile
# swapon /mnt/mmcblk0p1/swapfile

To enable the swap after reboot you will have to re-run:

swapon /mnt/mmcblk0p1/swapfile

Or you can make it auto-mount using the /etc/init.d/ system.

Nethack 3.4.3 and Rogue for Ben Nanonote

Just a quicky, two releases:
First is a link to Nethack 3.4.3 for Ben Nanonote.

Based on jmarch's src code, I simply recompiled (with optimal GCC compilder options) so that this will work with latest OpenWRT.
Also, I made sure that you can run it from any filesystem type - no "perm_lock" issues!

Download Nethack 3.4.3 for Ben Nanonote Binary

Second is Rogue also for the Ben Nanonote.
Makes use of setfont2 80x30 column mode but seems to work nicely.

Download Rogue for Ben Nanonote Binary

Screenshot using fbgrab of Rogue on Ben Nanonote.
The font use sub-pixels due to the NN's pixel layout. Looks much better on the actual device.

DOSBox 0.74 Open Dingux and Ben Nanonote

Well it's been a long time since posting. I sort of got burned out after the initial release of DOSBox... a few years ago (time flies) but I've got my mojo back and been developing again for the past few months.
I've got a few goodies ready!

First up is DOSBox for Open Dingux - this has been compiled to work on the A320. Until recently, 95% of the dev work was actually on the Nanonote. I haven't tested it on that yet but it may work as well.

Anyway, here it is. I've done a fair bit of testing the Open Dingux on my A320. I don't have a GCW-Zero yet so I don't even know if it will work - but I'm guessing it should. Please let me know if it doesn't.

There are no release notes included so here's the run down:

What is DOSBox?
Basically DOSBox 0.74 is a PC emulator for Open Dingux running on an A320 or GCW-Zero. It has a full MIPS32R1 dynamic recompiler. Once I get a GCW-Zero, I'll make this MIPS32R2.

 Civilization - One of my favorite 'test' games.

Dragonstrike

Installion
Included is DOSNav which is a freeware file launcher. I've installed DOSBox in /usr/local/dosbox. Include all the files in the binary distribution into the directory:

dosbox.dge
dosbox.png
dosbox.conf
dbfont.ttf
c_drive

Inside c_drive is the dosnav directory with the file launcher.

The dosbox.conf has been carefully configured for near optimal settings. You can play with the values by all means but if something doesn't work try these basic settings first.

By default the dynamic recompiler has been configured as the CPU emulation of choice as it's the fastest however please try the 'simple' CPU emulation as well as it's a good second choice if the dyna-rec doesn't work. It also gives pretty good performance in most cases.

An On Screen Display keyboard or 'virtual keyboard' is included out of necessity - which is basically code from the GP2X version of DOSBox.0.72.

Dingoo A320 Controls
Getting PC games to run in a satisfactory and enjoyable manner is heavily reliant on setting up the controls correctly - especially on a device like the Dingoo A320 that lacks a keyboard.

By default, the A320's controls under SDL already has pre-coded keyboard controls however their usefulness varies with the program you wish to run.

By default the controls are mapped in the same was the above link except for the SELECT key which now activates the Virtual Keyboard:

D-pad upKEY_UP
D-pad downKEY_DOWN
D-pad leftKEY_LEFT
D-pad rightKEY_RIGHT
A buttonKEY_LEFTCTRL
B buttonKEY_LEFTALT
X buttonKEY_SPACE
Y buttonKEY_LEFTSHIFT
Left shoulderKEY_TAB
Right shoulderKEY_BACKSPACE
START buttonKEY_ENTER
SELECT buttonKEY_ESC Virtual Keyboard
Power sliderKEY_POWER
Power holdKEY_PAUSE

You will notice that the D-pad directional keys, START (ENTER) and X (SPACE) button will be your "friend" as many games will already use these keys for movement and actions.

Should you need a keystroke that isn't mapped above there are two things you will need to do:

  1. Over ride the default behavior and use a mapper file.
  2. Use the Virtual Keyboard.

I'll discuss the mapper file option on a follow up post.
For now, a quick walkthrough of the Virtual Keyboard (VK).

SELECT = toggles the VK on/off
A = activate the current selection
B = BACKSPACE
X = RETURN
Y = SPACE
L = Toggle VK keyboard special/normal
R = Switches through the VK color schemes

Using DOSNav (A320)
Thanks to the lack of real keyboard on the Dingoo A320, it's a bit tricky launching software. To assist, DOSNav has been included. It's basically a file browser and lets you launch software.
Use the D-Pad to move around and START button to enter a directory or start an executable file.

Ben Nanonote Controls
The Nanonote has superior usability thanks to it's micro keyboard. Whilst not as fast, due to the lack of overclocking software, it's a lot more satisfying to use as it "feels" more like a PC.

Control input is all through the keyboard - there is no virtual keyboard option as none is required.

Ben Nanonote Mouse emulation
Two options here:
The "Ben" key (next to the spacebar) toggles mouse on and off. Use the cursor pad and the up/down volume for mouse clicks.
Or
The blue "fn" key, hold and press cursor pad or up/down volume together for "instant activation".

Function Key F9 = fn + F7
Function Key F10 = fn + F8

Everything else is printed on the keyboard and should be obvious.

Quit out of DOSBox
This work for all versions of DOSBox as it's the standard method.
Press +F9 at the same time.
On the Open Dingux Virtual Keyboard hit CTRL then F9
On the Nanonote, + fn+F7 (which is the key to access F9, see above)

DOSBox 0.73 for Dingoo A320 and Ben Nanonote - Public Test

I've just released a public test version of DOSBox 0.73 for the Dingoo A320 and Ben Nanonote.
Whilst I initially did most of my testing with the A320 I ended up doing my testing primarily on the Nanonote which is perfect for this kind of emulator.

What I am saying is that if things don't work on the A320, let me know :-)

Anyway, here it is.

OpenJazz for the GP32

A new port of the latest version (r36) of OpenJazz for the GP32.
Everything should be working okay and it runs quite nicely with sound and music playing.
I've included the shareware version game, however if you have the full CD version, I recommend using this for the extra levels and music!

Giana's Return now on GP32

The DIngoo A320 version of Giana was pretty straight forward (except for a little SDL bug) but that got me thinking - how well would it run on the GP32? Well it required a little more effort but surprisingly the port was fairly straight forward.
And thanks to the GP32's very nice hardware, it runs very well indeed! Please check it out.

Stella 2.3.5 Optimized Build v1.0 for Dingux

I was playing around with Stella for Dingux - but was getting a bit annoyed with some little problems. The default keymaps weren't very good and the build seemed a little slow. Selecting some options also seemed to crash the emulator.
So I decided to build my own version and share it around. It plays all my favorites at nice speed.
Pitfall II works but you will need to overclock to 420Mhz and it's still slow. What a beast!

Big thanks to the Stella developers, it's really is a great emulator - all these screen shots were taken using the built-in snapshot grabber.

River Raid - best shooter. This screenshot taken with Phosphor mode one.

H.E.R.O. - my favorite.

Pitfall - amazing for it's time.

Launcher and Menu Default Keymap
Up - Move up
Down - Move down
Left - Page Up (useful in the game select list)
Right - Page Down
(A) - Select
(B) - Cancel
(X) - Next Tab. You need this to navigate some of the menus!
Left Shoulder - Next menu/option item
Right Shoulder - Previous menu/option item (this doesn't work in the console menu).

Emulator Default Keymap
Up - Joystick up
Down - Joystick down
Left - Joystick left
Right - Joystick right
(A) - Joystick fire button
(B) - Not defined. I used it for snapshots.
(Y) - Console SELECT (usually select game number)
(X) - Console RESET (usually start game)
SELECT - Exit game, back to game selector.
START - Console RESET
Left Shoulder - Options
Right Shoulder - Console Menu

Install Default Directory
/usr/local/stella/roms - ROM directory
/usr/local/stella/screenshot - Screenshot directory

OpenTyrian v1.0 for the GP32

More love for the GP32.

This time the classic DOS arcade shooter Tyrian or in this case OpenTyrian.

The GP32 version mode runs fullspeed at 133Mhz but with out music.

Originally intended as an entry for the GP32 revival competition which never happened, this was something I always wanted to port across to the GP32. It's turned out rather nicely too - much better than I anticipated. There are separate FLU/BLU and BLU+ versions included in the binary package

I also have a Dingoo A320 port too. I know there already is an A320 version but I did my own version of it - which is faster and has a nice full screen display. This will be available shortly.

UPDATE: I've updated the Binary Package as I originally included a slightly out-of-date executable for the BLU+ version. The FLU/BLU version was correct. The BLU+ version is fixed in v1.01. You should download the Binary Package again if you are using the BLU+ version.

Giana's Return coming to Dingoo A320 soon!

I have been busy porting across Giana's Return for the Dingoo A320.

All SDL problems sorted, fully working, 60FPS with music, Giana's Return soon to bounce all over your Dingoo A320.

Giana's Return title screen running on my black A320.

Giana's Return first level.

I've been using the GP2X version as a base reference and I can say it runs quite a bit faster with the A320 running at it's default 336Mhz.

Giana's Return for the Dingoo A320 running Dingux coming in the New Year.

MAME4ALL Dingux v1.2

Finally a new release of MAME4ALL Dingux - it's up to version 1.2 now.

The main changes are:

- Added A320 screen brightness option to frontend.
- Fixed bug with games containing multiple FM sound systems. Was allocating two identical FM tables and segmentation faulting when on exit (trying to free the same table of memory twice). This stops some games crashing on exit.
- More speed and smaller executable. Perhaps some of the larger games may run now?

I, Robot runs really nicely now.

So does Bubble Bobble, though still needs a bit of overclock to run at 100%.
Hey, it's got 3x Z80s and 1x M6801 to emulate!

Parodius was the first game I got running back in v1.0.

I still have more planned for the next release of MAME4ALL Dingux so stay tuned! As always, more speed and more compatibility.

gpSpout GP32 v1.2

Distracted by the GP32.

Why another release? Did the GP32 really need an update of gpSpout?
I've played quite a lot of gpSpout on my trusty GP32. It's one of those instant on and play games that I love.
However, after playing it for many hours, i found that the scrolling wasn't quite up to scratch. Why wasn't it smooth? :-/

So i had a look at the code.
I wanted to add double buffering and flip screens with v-sync.
So i did exactly that.
Unfortunately this slowed the game down a fair bit and it no longer ran fullspeed.
I rewrote the video blit code, quick test and thankfully we've got a fullspeed game again.
Whilst i was at it, I improved the hiscore saving code to only save once on exit - help save those precious SMCs.
I also set the screen refresh to 100hz which is a good match for the game's native 50hz refresh.
The end result is significantly better display than version 1.1.
Try v1.1 first and then v1.2 so that you can appreciate the difference.

Big thanks to Florian Hufsky for the original GP32 port of Spout.
